There are very few (but still technically some) reasons to use a plug like this with a small generator. A small 15A generator could be used with a cord like this to feed power back into a circuit to keep essential appliances running like a fridge. But that's about it. Lol. It's still very dangerous.
That's. Not. A. Reason. You should never do that. Plug your appliances into the generator, or get a manual transfer switch installed by an electrician.
Backfeeding into your wiring gets linesman killed. Even keeping your mains breaker off isn't a garuntee, one faulty contact and hello manslaughter.
Obviously, IF you do it for whatever reason, you HAVE to open the main switch first. Not only for lineman safety, but the load of an entire neighborhood will definitely overload the generator and, at best, instsntly trip the breaker.
Not saying it's a good idea, just that it's one utility.
And I'm saying it's not an option, good or bad. It should never be done. It's illegal, it's reckless endangerment, and there's no reason to ever do it. If you have a generator, you also have extension leads and powerboards. Plug in your fridge, router, a kettle, and a laptop, and you're set.
