Do you expect costs to come down and/or incentives to improve in the U.S. (we are in California)? Got two estimates last year and it was about $25k or more for our house (YIKES). We have a quiet, high-efficiency gas furnace and don't use lots of heat, so can wait - but electrification is a priority!

I’m a UK person mainly, but… I wouldn’t expect costs to drop that dramatically. Maybe a bit, but it’s a fairly mature tech.

What should get cheaper is running costs (especially if you can pair with solar / batteries, or use smart tariffs)

Thanks - we do have a 4kwh solar PV system and a wonderful battery linked to it. I expect next time we need to redo our roof (sooner than later), we'll add panels for things like EV and heat-pump. There need to be more incentives on this side of the pond. Won't be 💩under Trump, so we'll wait...

Good to see this. I wonder if you could add in a question about winter peak consumption? The 6-10 kWh per day may be the annual average but it’s a lot more than that during v cold days and using 40 kWh+ can come as a bit of a shock when you read much smaller average figures in all the online info.

I'd like to see more focus on lifespan and warranty.
Perhaps a regulatory initiative to increase repairability would be wise.

Running costs seem fine to me, and pale in comparison to a replacement that would decimate any cost of ownership calculations.

A few people I know had failed compressors.

Is there any research on how heat pumps work with radiators compared to underfloor heating? As a company we deal with new floors in either new build or renovations and we try to get people to see the benefit of using ufh and often talk about heat pumps being a positive but without the specific info.

We often see flow temperatures in the pipes in our floor lower than 40 degrees so would love to promote heat pumps more but we don't have the data to show, even with the cost outlay of the pump, that it would be cost effective in the long run.

What can be done about frost protection? (When you most need the heat output, it drops)

Heat pumps have defrost cycles to deal with frost (though can be an issue if you get very cold, very humid days).

The efficiency does drop a bit as it gets colder, but worth remembering that the efficiency figures we quote are averages over the year - so take account of lower efficiency in winter
