I recently started re-reading Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions, startled by the memory that its main character goes crazy believing everyone else is an NPC, and there's the whole problem with the people who use that term, right on page 23

Solipsism, like libertarianism, is a thing that particularly seems to appeal to young white men and most of them thankfully outgrow it. Or they used to.
That’s a big plot point of the horror novel “If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe” where a cult dehumanizes inconvenient people as NPCs to justify violence.
imo there’s a problem with a certain type of person believing sci fi and fantasy novels are manuals for living. Elon, Dune is fiction ffs! and at least partly about how it’s a bad idea to blindly follow one person!
