My cat has learned that scratching the rug gets her attention. Namely, the attention she seeks is to get slapped, repeatedly, on her backside. If I ignore her, she shreds the rug. If I give in, I have to get down on the floor & slap her butt. The rug still gets shredded - just a little less.
