In the '10s I went to a community college to get into a career field. The first year I went on campus for classes b/c why not. The Composition I (basic writing) class I was in was a nightmare. Kids fresh from HS could not write a sentence, let alone a paragraph or essay. The prof was horrified.

And grading, if you’re doing it well, is less about assigning value and more about identifying flaws in what your students are doing and pricing feedback, something I realized far too late for it to be useful as a student.

i was a distracted student for most of undergrad, then i went to grad school and was slightly better (but the grades didn’t matter), then i took a few post-bac classes prior to med school and those were a breeze! turns out all i needed to do well in school was mature another three to four years.
