Living in the middle of Germany, I've come to enjoy both the bare evangelical churches and the ornate catholic ones. Fulda especially is worth visiting for the architecture. St. Bonifatius' resting place especially.

They actually one-up protestant churches this way, especially American megachurches! With Catholic churches, they try to show that some of the money goes to the churches, while the protestant ones have 100% of the money go to the pastor's 50th private jet!
