in your case, i’d imagine it would need a change of art style, something busier and more ornate, or just recalling a mood by aping (say) macromedia flash era Stick Figure Death Theater, or like a Bright Eyes cover (revealing some things about my past now)

i've seen stuff like this work with a full page spread or very large panel, with no text. not sharing space with narrative creates intrusion. lack of text carries the reader's momentum past it
this can draw more attention to it than you might want, but how long anyone lingers inevitably comes down to composition, narrative, and other factors like that
