Officials at this level should have to pass stringent background checks, and the results should be publicly available, so we all know when to pay attention to who they are talking to.

Honestly, I sort of hope that some of the US's allies pull back on sending information to the US. NATO absolutely should pull back on giving information to the US. They would only be aiding their enemy indirectly. Just, leave the US in its isolationism. They voted for that ultimately.

If those in the military have to do a security clearance check at even the *base* level of classification; If we have to provide all known addresses of the past twenty years, and all close acquintances and their addresses, and have our family and friends questioned, then they absolutely should to.

The FBI visits our neighbors every few years, and my husband is hardly a high-ranking official. I've had to work on his credit score to make sure he keeps his clearance. I can't believe there's even the possibility of these assholes skipping a background check.

At my (public) university all hires, no matter how lowly or august, must pass a background check. Every employee must take periodic Title IX, fraud prevention, institutional data protection, and ethics training. Most of us also have to take ADA compliance training and public service ethics training.
