I developed this hypothesis that Wicked couldn't go SO far off the rails because it had to dovetail with The Wizard Of Oz, but the sequels were not thus bound.

I definitely think Wicked the musical is better than Wicked the book, but Son of a Witch is better than Wicked the book. I haven't read the other ones though.

i loved the book. read it before the musical was conceived, but when i heard a musical was coming, my regret was that i knew the musical would doom any chance of there ever being a political thriller film rendering of the novel, which is how i read it.

I read Wicked years ago and loved it. I was mystified when they made a musical based on it though. I also read The Wizard of Oz and other Oz stories as a child and loved those.

Not to sound like a hipster, but I actually read and loved the book before there was a musical. In fact I was disappointed the musical wasn’t as dark or as serious, though I have since come around and am now a fan of the musical too. I mean, come on, it’s Stephen Schwartz. How could you not be?

Oh, I adored it! I read it right after I got out of rehab (the first time). I had lots of time on my hands. I think it probably helped pull my head out of an even more bizarre headspace so maybe there's that.

I think I like it because I have depression. Also read it before I think I even heard the musical which might have helped. But probably mostly the depression.
