Former French teacher here: lots of people want a one-stop shop for language learning, but that’s not how it works. Duolingo is an excellent tool, but not a replacement for speaking practice or other exposure to natural language.

Duolingo has decent explanation of grammar on the website version, but also, explicitly learning grammar rules is not necessary to becoming proficient in any language. Grammar can be learned through usage, although that is not the traditional way we teach it.

Re-learning French grammar since I moved to France 6 years ago has made all the difference in my ability to independently construct sentences and hear the nuances. It has helped me immensely to understand the structure then go at it. Feedback from my students: “Ah! Now I get it!”

For sure! I also think it’s better to be exposed to the weird grammar and get confused and then get the explanation later, because then (like your students) you can have a “ah now I get it” reaction instead of “wait I have to memorize this??” and you’re more likely to retain it.

In Russian, it tries to teach grammar. Unfortunately, it doesn’t actually explain anything, it just drills you regardless of understanding as if it were vocab.

I think it might depend on why else you are doing - I’m learning Dutch via a course right now and maybe once I have enough grammar, vocab and key phrases Duolingo might also help. I haven’t found it works well without that though - also last time I used it you were only allowed 3 errors/day

That's impressive, Dutch seems like such a difficult language to learn later in life. It's my native language (well, Flemish is but potato potáto) and I still have to think about what verb ends with a d or a t or dt.

I guess it’s a bit difficult owing to some sounds like g and sch - I’ve also studied Spanish and I think in general languages are tough to get good at.
If you’re younger you might get a lot of constant exposure which is tough to recreate when you’re an adult but just a matter of efforts I think
