Angering tranphobes isn't going to change the way those folks vote. It isn't worth a moments consideration. Thu's absence speaks louder, and if doing so is what Thu needs to stay safe and well, to continue working for the city outside the council chambers, they deserve our support 100%.

I can see that.

But it’s also going to embolden some of the worst actors to amp up the harassment campaigns to drive off anyone they think shouldn’t serve in the City Council.

And there are a lot of non-transphobic voters who will see only the absence, not the reason behind it.

I’m more of a “don’t let the turkeys get you down” kind of person.

I also haven’t received even a fraction of the hate and abuse Councilor Nguyen has, so I understand their reasons for remaining off the Council floor.

I’m just not sure that it will be an effective protest tactic.

Okay, but they should resign then. I do take issue with their statement where they say they were elected as a community organizer. They were elected as a city councilor. I think they’ve been a good one, and I think they were treated abominably by the worst bigots. But this is a bad tactical plan

If they resign, I believe it automatically goes to Creamer as the next largest vote-getter. I think Creamer has slightly worse politics than Thu, but I would 100% take that vote on whatever 6-5 issues come up than just accepting the total absence of a progressive vote for a year

The goal is to pass good orders in city council meetings, and prevent bad orders from passing. So not attending and voting makes it harder to pass good things and easier for bad things to pass.

Okay, but Candy isn’t going to resign, she has no shame. Same with Petty. So what Thu is doing is removing their own vote. And there have been plenty of 6-5 votes in the recent past. It’s not fair or just, but it’s just cutting off their nose to spite their face. There’s no victory here
