I’d like it if Australian political commentators could find a way to not draw on the US election when discussing the approaching federal election here.

Maga won because of high levels of ignorance (illiteracy) in America. Australians aren't that much better. Look up literacy levels.

Democracy is something we need to actively defend - perhaps it's an ideal we should aspire to achieve

I’m guessing it was a test of the media’s willingness to hold him to account and he’s delighted that they’ve uncritically megaphoned it all through for him.
