Yes and no. Yes, no one should trust the US under Trump. No, because if someone with a decent track record of honesty/good faith and conviction assumes the presidency, the world will give a sigh of relief and give us the benefit of the doubt.

Ukrainians are dying and their country is being decimated but Trump won't continue to provide resources unless they hand over some cash. Isn't that what this amounts too? A country on its' knees and Trump jumping right in to kick them while they're down. What an evil opportunist.

Trump, fElon & DOGE treat everything like a one-shot game and it works for them (and only them) in the short term. But international relations (like many things) are a repeated-game; credibility matters.

When the time comes to rebuild, we have to make the presidency less powerful. The answer to “how can we trust this won’t happen again” has to be “we won’t give any one person the power to cause this much chaos”

Non-American here: isn't that the whole point of the rigid system of "checks and balances" and separation of powers in government? Eroding that (politically and culturally) took 50 years of slow burning decisions spanning back to Nixon. How does one even attempt to build a system robust to that?

Conservative legal thought has increasingly moved toward a “unitary executive” idea where there is a robust authority of the president and that it is important to jealously guard against encroachment on the executives sphere by strict separation of powers.

That’s where my mind was sort of heading. Not to be a doomer, but if politically and culturally this kind of thought has been accepted, embraced and enforced enough for decades now to erode the existing checks and balances, then how would anyone possibly go about building a system robust to this???

IMO there is no “menu of democratic items” that you can simply select and implement to counter this rot. It comes down to consistently and continually practicing good democratic “hygiene” over and over and over for generations to ensure that the checks and balances don’t erode in the first place.

This probably all sounds disparate and poorly worded (bc it sort of is and 250 characters is not the platform for it) but the zeitgeist of my claims here is that America already HAD the apparatus to prevent this in place. But continual neglect and taking it for granted caused it to break down.
