I might not be fully recalling my history here, but didn't the Nazis specifically co-opt Roman imagery (the salute, the eagle, the torch for the Olympics in Berlin) because it showed empire and strength in their eyes? As a result, Roman and Nazi salutes would be synonymous in the modern world.

My only gripe is I wish the descriptions would highlight the manner in which he performed. He bit his lip and pounded his chest. It was an angry, aggressive, defiant Nazi homage. This was not Laura Ingraham’s gentle oopsie.
