Also, when I lecture, there is such an element of 'reading the room' (Are the students with me? Have i utterly lost them? Do they need a quick refresh?)

None of those can be accomplished by even the smartest machine learning/LLM.

AI for editing will depend on a myriad of parameters. How valuable is the work? How reliable is the AI? Is the AI proven in editing? How confident am I in the prompt writing or programming… That’s without various halfway houses such as getting ideas from the AI to complement your own.

Great point. I had an “important moment” during interaction with a colleague that was wrecked by AI. Some text was attributed to me with “hey, why did you say these things?”, I said “I didn’t write any of that”.. turns out it was the output he asked AI to generate

Also, the allure of AI for students is that it can create a piece of written work for them, about a topic they may not want to learn about themselves. They may not know how off-base or incomplete it is because, alas, they don't know the content or context themselves.

I agree! It’s all about the user! The user needs to be knowledgeable and skilled at surveying the task at hand, knowing the tools available, knowing which tools to use, know how to apply/use the tools, and be able to critique the quality and acceptability of the completed job. The journey matters!

This is so true. I remember crying over a draft of a college paper that just wasn’t coming together at all. I started a new draft from scratch, and my thoughts and subsequently my writing just clicked. It can be painful to abandon a draft but so liberating once the new one is started.

I had to do a paper on a country's history and political system for a political science class. I chose Nicaragua first because it's in the america's but scrapped it because it wasn't clicking. Switched over to Rwanda and had the most fun researching and writing a paper I ever had in undergrad.
