W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.

wow so all of a sudden its “racist” and “sexist” to indiscriminately fire every woman and minority you can find simply bc you assume they are unqualified based on nothing more than their race and gender?

Just look at these paragraphs from the AP story. Hegseth called Brown unqualified solely because he's Black. Then they fired him... and replaced him with a white guy so indisputably unqualified that he requires a Presidential waiver. This is what "merit" means to them. apnews.com/article/trum...

Trump pardoned the sentence of arguably the single biggest drug trafficker in American history on his second day in office!

"farmers are apoplectic. In Ohio, they’re stressed about USAID contracts and USDA cost-sharing investments. They held up their end. The government made promises. Now their family farms and livelihoods are on the line. Billions of dollars are at stake. It’s all being held hostage by Musk and Trump."

Jack Posobiec, a prominent influencer, has a long history of promoting antisemitic and white supremacist content. He traveled to Ukraine with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week.

His main argument was that the US constitution has transformed many times, not only through formal amendments but through informal shifts in elite and popular interpretation. Trump is effectively trying to entrench a new constitution, and it will be enacted to the extent we treat it as legitimate.

This could be one way that the Trump administration attacks abortion access, which in red states is now largely conducted by sending pills through the mail.

I was watching an interview from 1982 with the imperial wizard of the KKK yesterday, and in it, he was like, “despite what you may have heard, I really hate Nazis.” Did he really hate Nazis? Probably not. But he sure felt like it was the right thing to say to win people over.
