It is so funny. Final Fantasy is a complete and total blank for me. I know less going into this set than an orginal IP set like Outlaws of Thunder Junction.

My only real connection to the series is because Kenny Omega dressed as Sephiroth (and used the One Winged Angel music) as his entrance for his match at Wrestle Kingdom a couple years ago (also named his finishing move One Winged Angel ).
This set is the closest to "rules with no flavor" I've ever experienced in my 20+ years of playing MtG. I know nothing of the games and none of it feels resonant to me.
My regular play group text is a stream of everyone talking about their favorite characters, and I’m totally out of it. Just texting back “This seems great for Grixis spellslinger decks.”
My brother is super excited about it (as are many others of course) and I’m happy they’re happy but I’m in your boat. Just glad there’s a UB set coming that I do know well and am excited for (Avatar in my case).
IMO the important thing to know is that there’s 16 of them and they’re all different. They take place in completely disconnected universes. So learning about the lore from the outside is more about recognizing the larger character archetypes and tropes.

Sometimes they almost kiss but it doesn’t land well, the same way Star Trek isn’t a franchise that does romance
Oh and there’s usually a large bird, a little weirdo, and a guy named Cid
