You’ll never read about the Hunter’s Rest in Mitchelstown in a food critic’s column but honestly… there’s an awful lot to be said for a Good Feed. Nothing fancy. But the Good Feed establishment is an under-appreciated sector in the food world!

If you’re travelling from Cork to Kerry along the N22, a great pit stop for a good feed is Mai Fitz’s Bar & Restaurant, Lissarda. Yellow building, you can’t miss it. Sound staff, warm welcome, great grub, reasonably priced. It won’t make the posh restaurant reviews of the Irish Times but it’s a gem!
Filing this one today - was looking for somewhere like that between Mount Melleray and Co. Carlow . Stopped at another place and was quite disappointed in mine , though my husband was pleased with his .
Add to your list the Lisgrey House, in Cavan. No fuss, jug of cordial, proper veg with your excellent carvery. Always a Christening going on in the corner - the ultimate sign
The Shamrock Restaurant, Dungarvan (just off the Square, 4 O'Connell St). Non fussy food: from Bacon & Cabbage to Chicken Nuggets; reliable and good value.
Went to Luca’s in Letterkenny last night. Nothing fancy. Just good food cooked well. Place was mobbed. I don’t care if it’s organic and served with a jus, I don’t care if the chef has worked at a Michelin starred establishment, I just want a tasty dinner sometimes. And damn it was tasty.
I’m dropping pins on Google Maps for all of these places ❤️. On my photography road trips I never know where I will find myself, but after a full day of hiking and shooting a Good Feed and a Good Sleep is all I want.
I don’t know the breeding conditions of the chicken I just ate breaded with a side of deep fried pineapple and I don’t much care because I am so full and happy
I’ve heard great things about Donemark West so must try it next time I’m in Bantry. Speaking of Bantry, The Stuffed Olive does wonderful homemade cakes, breads, pastries, takeaway meals and other treats. Lovely staff too!
Trish and co. at The Stuffed are the best. Genuinely, my first port of call if there is ever a cure for coeliac disease. And their recipe book is wonderful!
We stopped there on the way back from our holidays in the summer and were blown away by the whole operation. We were all wrecked and they were so good with the kids and the buggy and the whole circus of us. Plus, SPUDS after two weeks in France 😂
Yes! They are really lovely. Last time we were there we commented on the size of the portions. Server nodded over at the owner and said: “He doesn’t like anyone to go home hungry.”
Oh, can I add Hester’s in Castlerea, Co Roscommon? I think its official name is The Golden Eagle. Jugs of miwadi, slabs of meat, masses of vegetables, and a bowl of chips just in case you’ve brought a spare stomach. Closes at six, though, cos we have to be up to the herd in the morning.
Wow, as a Kerrywoman living in Cork who knows the N21 well, I thought I knew most places around that route and near the N22. Never heard of O’Riada’s before but will be checking it out next time I’m back in North Kerry!
