Good point. Do you have any thoughts on the relative qualities of the Chinese vs Russian militaries? We always thought of how strong Russian army was and now we know they have the second best military in Russia. How do the Chinese compare army for army, air force for air force?

Impossible to say without seeing it in action, as was the case with Russia. China, unlike Russia, actually has a substantial manufacturing base. So at the very least, they would outclass Russia. The U.S. and Europe? Hard to say. China steals most military tech rather than developing directly.

Hopefully the Russian far east. Not that I want China to have it but if Russia and China need to fight someone it would be nice if they could leave Ukraine and Taiwan alone and work on each other.

The CCP (Xi Jinping specifically) has long-term plans for Taiwan and “pushing Russia back to the Urals” but the schedule has always been Taiwan first, Russia later. I hope Russia’s weakening state and unpopularity internationally has made China reconsider the order of operations, so to speak.

My two cents.
China always has a long term strategy.
If the regime survives (but also if not) a China owning Siberia will be closer to take Taiwan than it has ever been.

Not a strategy I’d recommend but if one has a fetish for territorial based empires like Putin and Xi — if one sees conquest as the secret to wealth creation in the modern world — one won’t have many people in one’s office telling them that they are out of their mind.

I personally always believed that China, if and when they decide to go for Taiwan, it would be first and foremost a Massive scale missile attack, to completely destroy everything on the Island, a years long campaign, with the intent to recolonise it in the future.
