1) Any main character lead pet peeves?
2) How do you feel about fairy tale retellings?
3) Favourite female characters?
1) making them appear perfect! everyone is flawed, even the hero
2) LOVE THEM
3) ooooh... Cathy Earnshaw (wuthering heights) and Villanelle (killing eve tv series) but the list goes ON
For dark romantasy it just depends on how "dark" it is - if it leans more towards genre crossover w/ horror, then probably not so much, but if it weaves subthemes of dark magic, demons or monsters, and general evilness into a larger romantasy story then it may work for me!
That said, I am really a sucker for ANY character driven narrative. I live for a solid, well-rounded emotional arc!
She wrote the Ember quartet and released HEIR in October!
Her use of setting to create tone and conflict is masterful, and she has such a way with voice I have always admired it
I love working with authors who have a clear vision for themselves and their stories!
what you can expect from me as an editor:
β¨οΈ goal-setting and timeliness make the dream work
β¨οΈ highlight your strengths, but focus on one or two major developmental improvements (if it were perfect, I'd be useless!)
subs that would make me cry tears of joy include:
π feminine rage
π flawed MCs
π selfish mistakes and sweeping redemption
π complex dynamics of magic and power
π girls saving themselves
ask me anything on #MSWL, editing, writing, #RevPit, or the undying importance of the Oxford comma π
p.s. pet pics also welcome
something subtle that helps this is "mingling" setting w/ character physicality (& consequently, emotion)
creating a balance & connection (or even mirroring bond) between surroundings and MCs experience in the given moment gives the reader an immersive feel w/o needing to be 1st POV
Massive fan of a grand redemption arc and flawed MCs, both of which are in my MS. How are you feeling about a YA romance fairytale retelling that features gaming Γ‘ la Skyrim?
Even managed to sneak a dragon fight in.
done well, I think it is incredibly engaging and offers a unique reading experience!
trickiest part is avoiding head-hopping (which is so easy to fall into)
stories centered on overcoming past versions of self are speaking to me most rn... just finished youngmi mayer's memoir & would LOVE to see a fictional MC with that kind of arc!
