Used to spend hours in 2nd hand record shops and record fairs in my teens and 20s. A month back I set foot in one for probably the first time in 30 years... the prices!!! Jesus Christ 😮

ELPI in Bonn, Germany was my 2nd home. I was focused on metal and especially thrash metal. They had the most of it. For hardcore punk I went Saturn in Cologne or used mail order. Saturn in the 80ies and still the 90ies was nuts! Biggest collection in the world (an advertising said).

Today nobody can imagine how it was to enter Saturn in the 80ies. Its was in the same old main building 1st floor. They had in thecareas the boxes with all records. Not all all records were in the boxes but were completely listed on seperator sheets with record number of the record company.

One needed to write a notice on paper (QR code hahaha ... no 🤣) and go to the tall shelfs along the walls. They were along and rectangular to the wall so a bit into the area. All record companies available and in those were rare or less popular records in those cases of the shelf. It was massive.

I used to work in the best record store (jury is still out on that one) in high school! Fugitive Records in Mesa, Arizona. I bought my first Huggy Bear 7 inch there and got to read MRR for free. Plus, talking to my boss Brian and the cool folks who chose to shop there and the owner hated me haha

I remember going to every small record shop in my nearby region looking for rare cuts, and new stuff. I practically lived at these places, because the kids that worked there were just as messed up as I was 😆 and it made for awesome conversations about music 🎵

2013. Afterschool, I used to go downtown to a local record shop underneath a Ben and Jerry’s. It’s where I got my first KISS vinyls, Unmasked and Asylum. (Secondhand of course). Unfortunately, it closed a year after due to flooding, and never returned.

Cellophane Square (CS) in the U-District (University of Washington) was a fantastic little store full of great new and used records. I spend more time inside CS than I did in classes! Always exciting walking into CS and finding a gem that wasn't there the day before. RIP.

I practically lived at Record Service and Record Swap in Champaign IL in my teens in the 80s. They were across the street from each other. Charlie Edwards of The Quaker Goes Deaf ran Record Swap and introduced me to bands I never would have known about on my own. He had awesome punk 'zines too!

For me it was the Rock Box in Camberley run at the time by the legendary Ken. He used to keep anarcho records he'd come across aside for me before putting any I already had on the shelf for everyone else.
The shop's still open but it's crap now. Full of overpriced new releases and nothing else.

Yep. Every Saturday morning, without fail, my bass player at the time (who was much older and could drive), would pick me up and we'd make the rounds to the local stores. Tower Records, Record Outlet (2 locations), Moby Disc, and Rock-On. Always digging for new bands on the verge of breaking.

I worked at Hastings in Houston back in the day. I finally convinced the buyers that there was a market for metal and punk in my store. I couldn't wait to see what they had sent to my store every week. I would love to discover new bands like that.

When I turned 17 and started getting settled in SLC, I quit my job at Little Caesar's to go work at The Warehouse. I had access to EVERYTHING and my collection skyrocketed. If I lived closer to downtown I probably would've tried to get a job at The Heavy Metal Shop.
