Just read the thread and you'll see it has been a perfectly normal period for small plane crashes. Actually last year same period was worse but that's just statistical noise. Rule of thumb: expect a fatal accident every 2 days. Not that it's a good thing.

Not all were fatal. There were 13 fatal aviation accidents in the same period last year. DC crash was the first *scheduled airline* crash with *passenger fatalities* since 2009.

You can be forgiven for losing count, but it is fewer than the equivalent period in 2024. I guess no-one was paying enough attention then.

Historically, rule of thumb, a *fatal* incident every 2 days. Total reviewed by NTSB about 7 accidents every 2 days.

Heard coverage of this on NPR. Incidents are not higher during this time span. However, incidents involving medium to large passenger craft have not happened for the last 16 yrs. until now.

They actually did say there were somewhat fewer vs this time last year, for small craft, yes. But the med to large passenger incidents are new since 16 yrs ago.
But this was on the radio yesterday, so this is from my memory. Can't find yesterday's programming easily.

Please stop worrying. It's a statistical anomaly exacerbated by all the coverage. Between 2021 and 2024 there were 180 aviation accidents in Arizona, of which 27 included at least one fatality. 5 died at Mesa last November. 1/2

Again, commercial flying has historically never been safer. The DC crash of course puts us all on edge. Look to expert commentary in future for the likely effects of the firings and Musk's ideas, and more lax oversight of Boeing, but for now nothing has changed in day-to-day safety. 2/2

P.s. fwiw, one of those crashes also happened near Marana. The pilot, not instrument-rated, flew into a cloud. Spatial disorientation can be a killer even if you are not also high on meth.
