The "smears" and "ostracism" were the result of a late-blooming lesbian woman being vocally bigoted, from a position of authority, about a marginalised group that, funnily enough, is disproportionately represented on the campus of a uni famed for attracting LGBTQ+ students.

The ONS didn’t advise the census not to collect data. They advised people to be careful about using the data from the last census. Mostly because the wording of the question was confusing (I assume deliberately). It has been shown that sections of the population misunderstood and answered it wrong.

But I would also suggest that because it was a voluntary question, a lot of people probably skipped it. Maybe they just didn’t feel safe answering it. People in the closet won’t have used it as a chance to come out. Transphobic parents might have lied about their trans kids.

Are you in your 70s? No platforming in UK dates back to the 1970s and 60s had violent student protests in many countries. In the UK legislation was passed in 1986 because of it. Or maybe you just don’t remember all that well - you might even be in your 90s!

Articles like these and those written by her own hand, are evidence that Stock has suffered little 'chilling effect' but in fact amplified her opinions to larger platforms. How this has been overlooked by OoS can only be breath-takingly naive or intentional.
