It’s always interested me why it is difficult to detect young juvenile stages of some fish species too. Grow fast or get eaten in the open ocean and as my explanation for marlin

Trevor, that's easy. Blue whales live in the OCEAN. If you're looking in fields, you're going to see COW calves.

Even funnier, the standard term in the older literature is "cow-calf pairs" for blue whales (and other whales). I'm using mother-calf instead in my paper.

Ha, I even knew and should have remembered that we use 'cow' for an adult female whale. Kind of erodes the edge of my already feeble joke....
