Savings from slashing science and medical research and firing government employees are not even detectable on the proposed budget compared to extending tax cuts and slashing Medicaid, food for the poor etc. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

NSF proposal rejected. Heart and soul poured out into this, and already published two papers on the proposed ideas since submitting. The funding rate is so small on these proposals (<10%), which is why it is so devastating to see the admin propose enormous cuts to NSF.

Do you work with aquatic eDNA applications for rare species? @methodsinecoevol.bsky.social is hosting a special feature and we're asking for proposals for papers now: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/toc/10.1... Deadline end of June (just for proposals not the papers!).

The President's Budget request as released yesterday will gut scientific research. Why should you care? 1) Science is fundamentally a jobs program. Many 100,000s are employed to do science and work for you, the US taxpayer.

In case you couldn't bear to read all the way to the end (understandable), here is the proposed picture for the BIO Directorate.

Trump's Budget is out. For NOAA, it's exactly what the previous passback document showed. Trump administration eliminations NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research in its ongoing fight against science and reality. www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/...

The Trump administration released a report last week that it billed as a “clear, evidence-based foundation” for action on a range of children’s health issues. But the report, from the Make America Healthy Again Commission, cited studies that did not exist. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/29/w...

I just reached 10,000 followers! That seems like a lot. Thanks all for making this social site a fun place to be, and for replacing the former site as a great place to learn about facts and science and truth and stuff.

When you try and use google to find more information on an obscure whale stranding, and the top (and only) result is a paper you yourself published 18 years ago.

So very proud of my student Zoe Rand for winning the Dean's Graduate Medal for top student in the entire College of the Environment! Anyone looking for an incredible quantitative postdoc?

Academia in 2025: For weeks I’ve been working through botched copy-edits of my monograph, outsourced by the publisher to a company I’d never heard of, until it finally dawned on me the terrible job might be AI. A quick search confirmed the company recently launched new AI software, which now means..

If only there was a handy summary of each article up front. Maybe people could write that and call it an "abstract". Just an idea. Maybe too radical and ahead of its time.

We interrupt your doomscrolling for a brief rant about scientific journal publishers apparently still not realizing that lots people share scientific journal articles online. Please enjoy "why do so many scientific journal articles still display weird when shared on social media? 🧪
