The only thing that changed about СССР was the flag. Same backwards damaged redneck leader, a narcissistic dictator, only this time he's using the old Czar symbols.
Americans and Russians and other Nationals of goodwill have been working together peacefully aboard the ISS for over TWO DECADES. It is not "the People" you need to look at. It is Putin - and his gang of bloodthirsty Fascists -across the Atlantic AND here in the States that are the problem.
Any of you dinosaurs remember the old movie "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!" It was cute & fun but nothing like reality. Kids have no fucking idea because history isn't taught anymore & hasn't been for some time. I watched wartime newsreels in school. My kids got Disney movies 🍿
When you understand that the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion was written by Russian propagandists well before communism, you begin to understand the differences aren't in systems of governance so much as patterns of cultural control.
Even if one (mistakenly) admired the Soviet Union, they should still hate the current Russia. The current version is just the imperialism without even the rhetorical pretense of equality.
I was born in the mid 70s. I don't hate Russia, but I don't understand the need to do much of anything with them. They are so backward that there's nothing to be gained from them except resources.
Your kids are correct...your hatred of Russia was unfounded....your hate should have been directed at the now defunct Soviet Union.
However, now Putin, with Trump's help, is trying to rebuild the Soviet Union, so your hatred may also rebound....hopefully your kids won't be involved with the war.
Putin indiscriminately murders his critics. Novachuk attack in Britain, thousands thrown out of windows, Navalny murdered, interfering in other countries elections, invading countries that are not Russia. You have good reason.
As an Air Force cold war vet, what Trump is doing brings back 'the good old days' when we were sure we going to war with the Ruskies, and they vastly outnumbered us in every military service. I bet we still have our old war plans locked away somewhere.
Army Cold War vet here…I don’t know if those old war plans survived to any archive but know that West Berlin wasn’t on any map to survive.
Was stationed in Frankfurt but had the opportunity to visit Berlin, E and W. Never forget the long night train ride and the zigzag through Checkpoint Charlie.
So I came up during the cold war and never had a hate, more a sort of regret for Russians, like if they could just see how much better it could be, why Rocky's speech in that one resonated with me.
Russia is not our friend & anyone who thinks otherwise if delusional.
There can be decent Russian people, but their culture is deeply narcissistic that manifests in citizens who are demanding, unempathetic & unkind.
How any veteran 40+ can see what is happening without a rage response is beyond me.
I have an irrational hatred of them because their border guards kind of kidnapped (?) us by dragging us off a train and marching us to a bank to "pay our fines", but when the provincial bank couldn't do anything, they took our cash and left us there.
There's a lot more to this, including being held at (sleepy) gunpoint for 9 hours, waiting for the bank to open, and having no rubles to buy anything after they robbed us. We had to hitchhike with a guy who turned out to be a sex trafficker who "joked" about killing us. Fuck those guys.

Yeah. That's done.
