Because much of that fleet is made up of oil tankers. Finland did the right move here, seize the ship (and thus its cargo). I'd argue giving every large ship coming out of Russia entering into international waters of the Baltic an armed NATO escort would put a stop to this sabotage BS right quick.

I would suspect that the tankers heading for Saint Petersburg are not yet fully loaded with oil. These guys are obviously up to no good. They are systematically and intentionally destroying infrastructure, which can be considered as an act of war, even if they don't use explosive kinetic energy.

Ursa Major was under western sanctions for carrying goods for the Russian military after the full scale invasion in 2022. Russia has been attacking civilian bulk carriers sailing out of Odesa and other Ukrainian ports; it is not really in a position to complain *if* Ukraine was behind the sinking.

This is the second time in as many months that C-LION1 has been severed through sabotage. It was already out out of action from 2024-11-18 03:30 UTC to 2024-11-29 05:39 UTC, with the Chinese bulk carrier Yi Peng 3, sailing from Ust-Luga/RU to Port Said/EG, as the likely culprit.

I've been monitoring the latency from Hetzner Helsinki to Hetzner Nuremberg since the first cable cut. Unfortunately only in 5 minute intervals, but at 18:40 Helsinki time the latency had already increased. So between 18:35 and 18:40.

EAGLE S indeed matches quite closely to C-LION1, but it's little weird, because ship already did stop at 11:50 UTC after crossing of ESTLINK2 and prior entering the area of many cable crossings.

If it was still dragging over C-LION1, potentially there are _multiple_ other cables damaged

I am told in private that there are two more Gulf of Finland communication cables cut. Connecting Tallin and Helsinki. I have not been able to verify it yet. Happy for help in that matter!

Out in the Baltic Sea a Swedish corvette is moving along another ship mentioned in this saga, XIN XIN TIAN 2.

The Swedish ship has been patrolling this area last days and it is a very common spot. I think their temporal correlation is without meaning.

And that ship does not fit the incident.

Electricity isn't imported from Russia, but as Baltic states are still connected to the Russian grid, some of the electricity between the states flows through Russia. Day to day balance of electricity import export with Russia is net 0. Forwarding to Latvia from Estonia hasn't stopped.

There are two reasons I can think of (besides normal anchoring). It is that you lost control and only have the anchor as a bailout or possibly if heading for collision to use as a emergency brake. But of course in those circumstances you hope to retrieve it. And they are extreme and very rare.

They are suspect, have been brought to Finnish waters, and this means the crew is effectively under arrest. Also, make no mistake, I'm sure that if ANYTHING pointing to sabotage is found, Finland will be more than eager to prosecute.
