I think the issue stems from a large number of transponders using the same faux MMSI 40000000

Its clever. Makes online tracking close to impossible. Likely works very well locally.

Yes you are probably right 🙂, but several years ago, I remember a danish warship escorting a Russian do., for a short time xmitted AIS letters that, with inserting a space character the right place, translated to "go home" in Swahili. 😁
