Fun fact: at first, Tolkien was calling his immortal wise beings “gnomes,” but he reconsidered and used “elves” instead.
Gnomes, it turns out aren’t tragic enough. Too whimsical. Not tall, ethereal or regal.
Because of that, he couldn’t use gnomes when he needed them, so he created hobbits.
