We do appreciate the Province’s investment in two new schools in Nanton—these are needed and will serve the community well. But this increase isn’t about schools. Other towns in our region with no new schools are also seeing the same spike.
And it’s not just us. Councils across Alberta are feeling the same frustration. The constant downloading of taxes and responsibilities onto municipalities by the Provincial Government is a pattern—and unfortunately, it’s falling on deaf ears.
In the spirit of transparency, we believe the time has come for the Province to issue their own property tax bills on their own letterhead. Municipalities should not have to shoulder the blame for provincial decisions hidden within local tax notices.
On Monday, we debated whether we should cut your services to make room for the Province’s increase. What would that look like? We’d have to cut $203,067 from an already lean $3.2 million budget. Should we cut reserves? Defer infrastructure repairs? Cut staff, programs, and reduce operating hours?
