the nyt will do the same eventually, they’ve only been normalizing trump for his entire career, every major corporation and news organization will bend the knee, it’s only a matter of time, there will come a point where they have to decide whether to resign or collaborate, most will collaborate
You are correct. The alternative is facing annihilation by Trumps vengeance. He doesn't forget an insult, and will punish his adversaries. Bad times we live in...
The NYT actually has an excellent legal department and they always fight this kind of thing. You can make an argument that they’ve normalized Trump on the editorial side in certain ways but that’s not coming from legal
The last time he sued, not only did he lose, he had to pay lawyer fees. (And I believe it’s still true that The Times has never had to pay in a domestic defamation suit. Overseas, in places like Russia, is very different.)
well, quite a lot has changed recently, you might not remember but the scotus in their infinite wisdom decided the president is now an all powerful god-king
It's probably the parent company, Disney. They can read the writing on the wall. If you confront Trump as president, he can make life a lot harder than forfeiting $15 million. He says he will take revenge on his enemies, and he probably means it. The legal niceties mean nothing any more.
Congratulations George and ABC! You just bent the knee and lost to a felon, insurrectionist, adjudicated sexual abuser, and the biggest liar and threat to our democracy today. Freedom of speech and the press be damned!
Well, now we know how Trump is going to pay, at least in part, for his forthcoming “Presidential library” (whenever that laughable joke comes into existence), which promises to be a sinkhole of corruption, much the way his Washington D.C., hotel was during his first administration.
These fuk heads are more powerful that trump and his minions WTF are they afraid of that he’s going to say bad things about them? Well hell they should nail him every chance they get! That’s why our great independent journalists need our support they are not afraid!!
Agreed.
GS made no distinction between legal definitions and broad.
When you consider this in conjunction with the principle of reckless disregard, ABC would have no defense.
The judge agreed that she had been raped. And NY has anti slapp laws. I’ve been party to several frivolous defamation suits in NY via various jobs and they would have won this, hands down
Unfortunatly, although everyone thinks he did, you can't legaly publicaly proclame he did, that's the part that count. ''Jurors rejected Carroll’s claim that she was raped, finding Trump responsible for a lesser degree of sexual abuse''. ABC lawers knew that.
Steph repeatedly said the jury found "rape.". They didn't, because of a technicality. Steph should have used their words (sexual abuse), then hammered anyone who defends the idea that forcible digital penetration isn't really rape.
Incredibly disappointing. Though it may have made sense from a litigation or cost perspective, it is really a poor look in the face of an incoming authoritarian administration.
I expect this will result in a loss of viewership.
Obviously, it’s not a legal decision. They are worried about access to the trump administration, perhaps prosecution by the Trump administration or persecution, and perhaps dumb MAGA boycotts.
Not only is this nauseating subservience to the nascent oligarch, they will receive nothing but ridicule from the rapist, and they will deserve all of it. We have been so utterly failed by big media to the point where they deserve their coming obsolescence. Cowardice instead of courage.
I agree. I really wasn’t a fan of the NYTimes allow the United CEO write a propaganda piece for them. I’m all too painfully aware that this nation is run by oligarchs.
Yeah. We’re allegedly the richest country in the world. But you really wouldn’t know that from everyday people. It’s all the assholes at the top who are worried about their stock portfolios and shareholders. I’m just sick of this shit.

For what?
Ketchup stains on walls? A ‘How to Lose Allies in 10 Days’ workshop?

It’s a fucking shakedown.
But it makes very clear how the next four years will go.
Every entity will bend over.
