"Trump has an obvious weakness that makes America weak. He places the American economy at risk for the sake of a personal foible, a visible vulnerability." snyder.substack.com/p/trumps-psy...

Lawlessness and shamelessness.

One of the striking things about the Abrego Garcia case is that would be trivially easy for the government to demand his return and give apologists an easy talking point: "Yes, sure, mistakes happen but see, they care about getting it right & doing it legally after all." But nope.

So, a hypocrite then. Shocking.

"Look like" ????

The President of the United States of America posted this 15 minutes before the announcement of the tariff pause. This would be a straightforwardly criminal message, were the rule of law currently operational in the usual way, for those with insider knowledge of major market shifting policy news

In Nazi Germany, the targeted population was encouraged to self-deport and the state sought to impoverish them to force them to leave.

Our president, in addition to being corrupt, is a fundamentally weak and stupid man. Weak, because he backs down after any real pushback, and stupid because he's let the whole world know his playbook.

This is such bullshit. The Trump Administration sent him there, now they can go get him. We're going to invade Greenland and Canada, and we can't get one person back from a facility in El Salvador that we're paying them to house people from us?? If you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you.

Cowards, the lot of them.

If you fill your military leadership with people who are either ignorant of the kinds of diverse literature purged here, ok with the purge, or, worse, excited by it… you are going to get a very specific kind of US military leadership and it does not resemble l the side that won the Civil War.

100% This.

Whenever you write something like this it should be antisemitism in quotes at bare minimum or in some form making clear that they’re aren’t actually cracking down on antisemitism

Total clown show. And a pretty poor one at that. 🤡

Boy, when you've lost the Wall St. Journal...

“.. Furniture producers in China have seen a complete halt in orders from U.S. importers, and we’re hearing the same across toys, apparel, footwear, and sports equipment. .. Almost everything is on hold as it relates to China business.” @loriannlarocco.bsky.social www.cnbc.com/2025/04/12/t...

A helpful guide to the current state of US trade policy:

So, um, what exactly is being tariffed this hour? I swear I've lost track. As some smart people have said, this is the stupidest way to run an economy.

Mostly the graft, really.

And graft

"No one man should have all that power. But there is an obvious solution..." www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

He's right: Trump's little experiment taking the country back to 19th century economics has been a disastrous clown show. Funny, if it weren't for the fundamentally and globally weaker position the US is now in.

Stupid. Also self-destructive. Also really, really stupid.

You gotta pay attention, but this is really good. h/t @neilirwin.bsky.social “Any country other than the US precipitously raising and lowering tariffs, gutting its Internal Revenue Service and nonchalantly considering territorial grabs would have seen smoking-hot capital flight months ago.”

How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia? Before you open this thread, take a guess. Settle on a number and then compare it to what you'll learn in this thread. 🧵

Pretty much says where this Administration is on the whole white supremacy thing.

When the head of ICE starts talking about how great it would be to have Amazon Prime for shipping human beings to a concentration camp in El Salvador that no one ever leaves, you’ve gone way past “it could never happen here.”

Looks like there is administrative fraud involving falsely deceased people, but it's the fascist government commiting the fraud. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Sensible. Saves volunteers having to put "I did this" Trump stickers on everything.

Total federal spending is up +8% in 2025 year-to-date on April 9 over 2024. The illusion that the fed govt is tightening its belt is contradicted by its own real-time expenditure data. Admin spectacularly hammering some things but raising spending elsewhere. Was -7% just after Inauguration Day.

As context: -Roberts, Kavanaugh, Barrett were all on 2000 Florida Recount team for GWBush -Kav, Gorsuch, Barrett all appointed by Trump -Last Dem prez to appoint a chief justice was Harry Truman 1946 -Most of today's Americans have never lived w/ Dem-appointed Scotus majority. (Changed 1969)

Agree w this framing by Sen Schiff. My parallel argument yesterday fallows.substack.com/p/standing-u...

It’s a month since the administration detained and disappeared a green card holder, a lawful permanent resident. We cannot allow this to be normalized or forgotten.

This is a thousand times more of a threat than the economic devastation we’re all reasonably enough distraught about out. The constitutional order as we’ve known it is hanging by a fraying thread that trump is holding a straight razor to with no one even reaching to withdraw his hand.

the basic problem facing american democracy is that one party has decided it wants a king and will hand over as much authority as is necessary to make that happen

The president ordering the DOJ to investigate former appointees and accusing them of treason for doing their jobs is straight-up authoritarianism.

This is how we lose free and fair elections—it’s not that elections go away, it’s that the GOP manages to make it impossible for slivers here and there to vote and thus lock in a majority of WHO votes going forward.

The fear among academics and lawyers now talking on the record on just about any topic that involves the federal government or the White House is really extraordinary and worrisome, and getting worse, it seems to me, every week. Dissent by an establishment figures becoming verboten in the US

I agree with @timmiller.bsky.social that Democrats seem terrified of the possible optics of coming after Trump’s immigration regime. But it’s actually very easy to say kidnapping innocent people and expelling them “for their beliefs” is bad.

This.
