STEM absent a "liberal arts" foundation is, IMO, what is truly terrifying. Just because you can build it, does *not* mean you *should* build it. STEM practitioners need a moral compass.

Think about Bezos, Musk, Zuckerberg & their minions. Do you really want them shaping our future?

I don't know a ton about Russia / the USSR, but I've worked with great software engineers from there. I don't think the mess in Russia is due to a STEM shortage. More likely it's due to a shortage of experience & understanding of what it takes to create & be a citizen of a "people's republic."

I'm not blaming STEM. I'm saying that STEM in a vacuum is very dangerous. AI is as significant as splitting the atom or quantum mechanics (IMHO) & it seems to be being developed by people without a moral compass or the curiosity to consider what could go wrong. That's just one example...

Short term efficiency isn’t the same as long term efficiency. Sure it was efficient for DOGE to fire employees but losing the institutional knowledge is going to do great damage - as evidenced by the need to rehire people that were dumped in the purge.

I also taught college--in the business school at UNC-Chapel Hill--and students asked, every class,"Will that be on the test?" There was no intellectual curiosity, no love of learning. "No Child Left Behind" punished 35 years of students for thinking critically--our biggest educational failure.

Absolutely! I don’t mean this for you necessarily but I was always curious about Business Majors that seem to only have the goal of making money. Students I came in contact with were very short on empathy and even ethics. They translated EVERYTHING into monetary equivalent. Very disturbing.🫢

I honestly think experts on childhood education should be deciding the curriculum. Parents are not experts in childhood curriculum. This is what the DOE wants to do now, right before they hand it to the states. Basically "we will offer no guidance whatsoever "
