I pretty much learned this as a preteen watching television. I don't understand how anybody could talk to the police without an attorney, especially decades after seeing this play out in crime dramas

But I guess when scared, it's easy to forget protocol, all the more need to remind people of this🙏

It begins with a non-confrontational Behavioral Analysis Interview. Here, the police act friendly, try to earn your trust, and they look for signs of deception. And if they think you’re lying, they’ll move you into the interrogation phase. But here’s the problem:

Behavioral analysis is junk science. Study after study shows that humans are terrible lie detectors. We’re no better than flipping a coin. That includes studies of police, and those trained in Reid-style behavioral analysis.

Having arrived at a (unreliable) hunch that a suspect is lying, the Reid method then takes a suspect through a guilt-presumptive interrogation aimed at extracting a confession. The first step is a *positive confrontation*: “We know you’re guilty.”

They tell you that they’re not here to discuss whether or not you did it. That’s off the table. They just want to know why. It’s here that they move to step 2, *developing a theme.* This is a way to minimize the seriousness of the crime.

“You didn’t mean to,” they might suggest. “I would have done the same thing in your shoes. You didn’t plan this. What did she expect, dressing like that?” The goal is to offer the suspect a frame for viewing the crime that makes them more likely to confess.

One of the main contributors that drew me to studying psychology was one of my early professors who was regularly called upon in criminal trials. He explained all of the ways he could influence proceedings and it was, frankly, both fascinating and horrifying beyond belief.

Using simple tricks, he could completely alter the jury and judge's perception of events. He could make them forget key points or change their mental timeline just by how he presented his testimony.

I realized some time later that he probably wasn't helping the "good side" most of the time.

I’ve watched so many interrogation videos and in each one have seen these steps. I boggles my mind when people (in the US) don’t just sit down and immediately demand a lawyer. I am so sorry for what you’ve been put through and continue to deal with to this day.
