I think I’m the only person in the world who doesn’t like it. I forced myself through the first season at my husband’s behest. Found it very boring and the therapist preposterous. First episode of second season was filled with sickening unnecessary violence. I was done.
I was going to watch it soon but I think I’m enjoying the crime drama called American politics right now. Not as much blood on the screen but heaps of backstabbing, theft, lies and standover tactics.
If you enjoy the Sopranos - and haven’t watched it already, then Breaking Bad would be the logical show to go to next. And after that, probably Ozark. While the Sopranos combines crime and family dynamics, it uses a family that is pretty much immersed in a culture that has been portrayed on screen
Many times, where Breaking Bad and Ozark excel is that they bring criminality into families that were previously “upstanding” but circumstances have pushed one member into crime, with the fallout effecting the families in various ways. The Sopranos begins in a culture that is recognized as being
Separate to our own, but largely familiar from movies. The following two begin with one protagonist being a rather dull chemistry teacher and the other a rather dull accountant. The Sopranos makes you consider moral decisions in a known framework, the other two don’t have that. There are no rules
Started watching last year. BF "couldn't believe I hadn't seen it (!)" Other shows have kept me from getting more than halfway through. I try to keep in mind: it was THE edgy show of its time. 🙃
Also the acting. I recall a scene where Tony and Carmella are in the kitchen and he is making a sandwich, they don't talk to each other. The sense of alienation is so strong. Being interesting and commanding without speaking is really high level acting.
Watching The Sopranos for the first time feels less like watching a show and more like uncovering an ancient prophecy foretelling the rise and fall of every man who ever thought he had things under control.
My 28 yr old son discovered it last year & was mad I’d never suggested it for his viewing. Apparently, it’s my job to educate my kids on the best movies & series to watch even if I’m old. Rome & Deadwood are also excellent.
Tracing David Chase’s route from Kolchak to The Rockford Files to I’ll Fly Away to Northern Exposure to The Sopranos is a worthwhile way to kill off the hours in front of a TV.
The storyline when Paulie visits a psychic medium who claims to talk to the dead roughly approximates how Giuliano Mignini developed his theory of the case.
That’s how we talk, it’s not something that can be created, only mimicked. Good or bad, Philly, NYC, aren’t that far off. Couldn’t shake it if tried. 😔
I watched it last year for the first time. Found the writing and acting on point. And they seem to mangiare il cibo giusto. (Just now trying to learn Italian after my grandparents immigrated from Naples in 1906).
When it was first run, it was shown on Sunday evenings. On Monday mornings I to curse at everything. The show had been absorbed in me to the point where I was cursing as freely as they were.

I mean who wouldn't?
but Deadwood is better.

Weiner wrote in the later seasons.
But for the greatest impact, I strongly urge you start at the beginning, S1.
May I ask how you know him?
Yeah, welcome. It just gets better and better.
And ‘The Wire’ and
‘Deadwood’ are as well…
These are all masterworks, developed and written singularly by genius writers.
Change my mind..
Time for me, enjoy!!
Really great!
Do the bad guys include an Italian prosecutor?
The other was The Wire. We binged both after their prime. We got how they won so many awards, especially with the writing.
(As long as they're HERE, not over THERE.
I'm still mad at Italy!)
