imagine covering a color with thin layer of a different one
from a far, they may mix in a weird way

that's what programs do. math forces color mix in a weird way, making them darker or brighter

I find it so interesting, for some reason, that you use a dark color set to a bright mode for highlights and a light color set to a dark mode for shadows. Never thought about trying it out that way!
