It lasted more than one day and made entire cities practically unusable because some NPCs were unkillable but could still be infected and pass the infection along. And there were enough bots who would just keep on respawning and going back after they died to keep it going once someone kicked it off.

The 666 massacre was intense but as far as I'm aware it didn't literally shut the game down for the servers affected. It was a bug that let people kill other players when they weren't supposed to, and it was effectively turned in to a WoW open-PvP server at the time for the exploiters.

Meanwhile the Corrupted Blood incident fully shut the ability to play the game for absolutely everybody on those servers. You couldn't go to any major hub, you couldn't get to the majority of quest givers, you couldn't do anything besides hide in the wilderness once it ramped up.

So for quick reference, there is a raid boss in old WoW that had a mechanic called Corrupted Blood that did damage over time and every tick it would spread to nearby allies. Hunter pets getting stabled with this DoT on them would still have it when re-summoned outside of the raid.

This resulted in a never-ending spread on players in the main cities, spreading to NPCs and perpetually ticking away, killing anybody who got infected, leaving the roads of main cities paved solid white in player skeletons.

Players ended up organizing quarantine zones to try to stop the spread.

The player data and location tracking from this event was famously sent to the CDC to research how populations would organically respond to extremely deadly and highly contagious pandemics.

Blizzard managed to fix the issue and patch the bug and it hadn’t been a problem since.

Minor correction: The data wasn't sent to the CDC (Blizzard didn't actually collect the data in the disruption). However, a collaborator of mine and I wrote a paper talking about the application of it to infectious disease modeling.
