Whoo boy I remember 2016 looking through academic work on fascism and it was kind everyone had their own bespoke and personalized definitions that got so weirdly specific that fascism almost couldn't ever exist at all. No cult of youth? Not fascism!

I started suggesting Trump and MAGA movement had fascist tenets after his first golden escalator speech announcing his run for president. After Robert O Paxton wrote Trump's actions were to be labeled fascist, I thought the debate was over. Yet most people still did not take the threat seriously.

Yeah, the convention "lock her up" stuff hammered that home. You have to go all the way back to Cromwell and the Rump Parliament to find something like that in our history. Not even Yancy and the Fire Eaters went that far.
