they mean using the phone activation method for xp, where you would call up microsoft, give them a code on your screen, and they give you one to enter to activate windows without the internet.

That was a complex algorithm that someone solved years ago.

Not that XP has any value now: there's no way to go online with it since it lacks SSL features needed for HTTPS.
Some browser might work, but it's gruesome: the only reason for XP is "retro"gaming.

if it was made during or after 2008 it's probably fine and won't croak (same if it was serviced during or after 2008)

otherwise just make sure it doesn't get too warm and don't keep turning it on and off repeatedly

reballing doesn't work- the GPU itself is faulty and needs to be replaced, only replacing it with a different GPU would fix it. would cost too much and at that point, just buy a reliable unit

I have four so I should be fine.

Phone activation codes sounds fun.
I tried to do windows keys myself but got lost on the whole semi custom base24 encoding, so my thing can only do the boring windows 95 keys.
