Yep. Any key can be bypassed with brute force, that it remains functional if a hurricane hits is far more important 🤣

Also, depending on where you live, they can get quite sluggish when cold.
Great fun standing outside in -20°, entering the code repeatedly, as the bolt moves a few mm's on each go. 🙄🥶

My Yale Assure lock has contacts underneath that I can hold a 9V battery up to if the main batteries go flat unexpectedly. And I only have my car keys if I’ve driven somewhere - I am blessed with decent public transport and a nearby cafe.

As for a backup keyway, I have a back door with a physical key, but I view that as more vulnerable - guessing there are more petty burglars around here who know how to pick a lock than hack a keypad.

Yeah, and the window next to the door is vulnerable to a rock. I’m reasonably confident that the lock I’m using, while not unbeatable, is secure enough not to be the weak link.

Can't speak for every one but the one I have on my room has an aux power port on the outside so if the battery dies you can get in. Just gotta store the little battery holder/port somewhere outside the area like in a key box or garage.

i used one for years (no choice in the matter, sadly). i'm thankful that whoever designed it did it so that the battery would die as you were trying to *lock* it, and not ever when you were trying to *unlock* it. never got locked out, but a few times i was late to work...

When it comes to a door lock sometimes it’s better to splurge. Ours has a keypad, a fingerprint reader, NFC and Apple HomeKey support, but a backup “dumb key” in case of battery failure - and a front facing USB C port to connect a power source if you don’t have the key on you

Our rationale is that if someone wants to break in, there are infinitely easier ways to do it than beating the lock. Massive glass doors at the back, a window on the porch. We also have security cameras, but the area is very densely populated and we know our neighbours

The thing is those methods are far more conspicuous than one of the half-dozen nondestructive bypass options that your smart lock introduces. Nobody looks twice at some guy taking a few extra seconds fiddling with a smart lock, but they'll definitely notice if he hucks a rock through the plate glass

Yeah, I’m not saying it’s a good option for most people but it’s what works best for us. The density and community of our area works in our favour, in combination with the camera system and also the husky factor, plus the Tesla in sentry mode out front.

See, to me all I hear from that is "my front door lock has even more attack surfaces than my neighbor's Kwikset deadbolt."

It may be more convenient having all those options, but by definition that also makes it less secure because there are so many more avenues for vulnerabilities to be exploited.

Agreed, but that’s a compromise we’ve been willing to make in exchange for the convenience of telling Siri to unlock the door while we’re loaded up with shopping (for example). It’s not immediately obvious it has touchless unlock, from the street it just looks like a keypad (which is good)

Check out the Schlage combo lock. They have ZWave and Zigbee versions so you can automate setting codes and stuff via home automation, and it has a traditional keyway. I'm a big fan.

You should never and most digital home locks still have a key as backup.
