What would you call the small room in an old house that's just inside the door. Not quite large enough for a couch. Often open (no doorways to other rooms). Often where the upstairs staircase begins.

If it's an actual room, foyer. If it's just a hallway that leads to the rest of the house or the only separation is the floor pattern, then I'd call it an entryway.
Hallway. Foyer to me is only in a commercial building, I would never use it for a home (NE England). Porch to me has a lockable door to the hallway and is where you put shoes and coats before you step into the hall.
