Hot take: all sessions projected onto big screens at conferences should be in light mode. People/conferences who use dark mode slides hate their attendees.

I don’t think dark mode slide people hate their attendees.
I do think they are designing their slides outside of the context of the environment so they don’t realize how stage & room lighting affects their presentation
Conf organizers could help by testing, providing guidance
We once prepped dozens of sessions for a two day event, all with dark mode. After one day of feedback we went back and changed them all. It was definitely a learning moment for me!
I’d say contrast is key, dark mode works as long as you have high contrast, do not use blending colors, less text is more, and go for immersion. Same goes for light mode actually but it hurts my eyes 😅
The challenge is that very rarely does any dark mode, especially one designed by the firms who create event templates, shoot for that. It *can* be done, I just rarely see it.
