When I was at the LA Times I pre-wrote an obit on Mario Vargas Llosa that I put a LOT of work into and they chose to run wire instead and I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the heart.

This kind of thing is so demoralising. When you’re invested in an obit it’s one of the hardest things to write, to really get the tone and the info, the family, the feeling and the nuance.
Sometimes, NYT has multiple pieces after an important figure dies. One is the pro forma obit. Others may be from art critics or other experts on the trajectory of a person's career, social impacts etc.
Could you reach out, and, uh, remind them about your piece? And ask them to run it too?
