Hawaii's Mauna Lona observatory is where Charles David Keeling started the first continuous measurements of CO2 in 1958 - hence the name of "Keeling curve" for the graph showing annual variations and accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keeling_Curve)
