I have artist friends who I assumed did ok on Bandcamp tell me it’s bleak af for them on there as well with people doing all the free streams and moving on without buying.

The pool of people who even know about Bandcamp isn’t large enough, and there’s a lot of “preaching to the choir” with it in terms of artists supporting it more than end listeners. In some ways, it functions more like a tip jar than a store.
I've found that other artists are the only people who actually listen to my music anyway so I'm sort of building a small group of like-minded people who treat music as a thing to purposefully listen to & support, rather than just using it to fill silence which a lot of streaming users seem to do
Exactly; the data/math I’ve accumulated over the past year plainly shows that every 1 play (not even purchase, far far more scarce) on Bandcamp happens in the space of ~1500 streams on Spotify - it’s a hell of a disparity!
Feels like it reached critical mass ages ago; I’m essentially giving things away these days just to connect on there, groveling for the occasional $30 annual subscription. I see artists playing 500+ cap rooms here in NYC selling less than a dozen of their press-cycled albums on there, regularly.
