It's surprising the military hasn't stepped up. They're number four on my list of possible remedies to the darkest period in our nation's history. Where are the DOD loyalists to the Constitution? Are they cowering in their walk-in closets? They need to grow a spine.

As a retired war veteran who has witnessed more than my fair share of military coups, I fully believe in civilian rule of the military. Our oath is to the Constitution. Military obligation is to obey LAWFUL orders of those appointed over them. Right or wrong, the drunk was lawfully appointed.

You're correct, but in practical terms, it is very difficult to disobey a direct order that you believe may (or may not) be unlawful. For example, torturing prisoners is unlawful, but if you call it "enhanced interrogation" and redesignate them as terrorists, then it's "acceptable".

This is why civilian control of the military is hardwired into our constitutional structure. Military leaders have developed lifelong loyalty with their troops, but we the people can still exercise control by selecting their civilian bosses at the ballot box.
