We had so much fun with The Great Ace Attorney this Summer. Its real crime is that it was stuck in Japan for so long. 🧵

And I'm now trying The Great Ace Attorney for the first time. Going into it blind. Beat the first case, and I love it already. AA4, 5, and 6 all felt like a continuation, but mechanically, this one instead feels like an evolution.

Ryunosoke is such a polite goober. He's so likable already.

I was impressed at how intricate and varied the mechanics are compared to the main games, (including Spirit of Justice, which came after it), and even the presentation is more dynamic here! The jury system alone is a real breath of fresh air, and I'd love to see it return in future installments.

Pitting jurors against each other and dealing with multiple witnesses on stand who may not see eye to eye is really entertaining, and that's just the trials. Investigating is also really good, thanks in part to the new deduction/correction mechanics.

It all feels more involved and less formulaic than Phoenix's antics. In fact, I was surprised to find an investigation-only case, which never happens outside AAI. Moreover, while we have an established recurring cast as usual, not every single character appears in every single case.

I also loved with the setting. Taking place in the turn of the XIX century and removing all supernatural elements made this surprisingly refreshing, with a more grounded cast than usual.

The way Sherlock Holmes and his novels are integrated into the narrative is quite clever, playing with your expectations if you're familiar with these works.

At first I wasn't big on the name change to Herlock Sholmes, but it makes the “we have Sherlock at home” vibe even funnier. He's delightfully eccentric and illogical. A real goofball that had us laughing out butts off every time.
