It IS a real issue, and trans people were not uniformly ‘already hated.’

Keep in mind this is to distract from real issues so they could rally people around the shared cause of hating trans people. If you convince people the minority they already don't like is to blame for all the issues, they don't have to fix those issues, just target an already hated group.

I was born in 1983, I don't even think we knew they were trans back then, it's either you were a hermaphrodite born with both pieces and you lived as one of the other, or you had that surgery and transitioned from one state of human being to another. Many fish do this naturally though. No surgery.

When asked outside of a political context, most people are, at worst, "neutral" when it comes to a stated disposition toward trans individuals, as one would expect from a society that isn't poisoned by politicians constantly inserting hatred into their rhetoric.

They weren’t thought about much at all. They are a perfect scapegoat because a lot of people have either not met any irl or not realized they have. It’s sadly easy for people to hate a group they previously had no emotional ties to.

Transsexuals (aside from the sex aspect, which they always hate) are just the most obvious iteration of that non-conformity.

You're absolutely right on both counts.

It IS, however, used by those in power as a distraction. If they can get the rubes (how they view the general populace) to villify anyone perceived to be different, the rubes won't notice that those in power are the ones whose boots are at their throats.

I'm saying "real issues" as in, trans people existing is not an issue, and not that they were universally hated, but that they were able to prey on people's biases.

Thank you. I appreciate that a lot. I've been misinterpreted a lot on social media and I try to be very careful with my wording and avoid reactivity. I understand people are scared right now and on edge, and I get why my wording could seem bad. But no, definitely, I agree - tired of transphobia!

I'm not upset at being misunderstood because I know how stressful everything is. I try not to be bothered, but even living in NY state, I've been feeling a lot more dread than usual. I worry for myself and for others, especially in states with less legal protections.

Ah, really? I haven't thought of it that way before. I used it to mean that it's not something that really affects the life of people (as in, trans people existing does not negatively impact the lives of cis people, there is no actual problem here, it's just bullshit)

Me too. I read it more as "trans people harmlessly using the bathroom is not a real issue for cis people", etc, because those are the kind of fake issues they are using as a distraction while they enact fascism. But obviously being targeted is real-- you didn't say it wasn't.

Yes, this is what I meant. It's not a threat like it's made out to be, for trans people to exist in society and be given rights. It's treated as the end times when it's really not. There's so many bad things that are actually happening that people ignore in favor of fake outrage.

I would like to believe what is true: the only uniform hatred trans people experience is from a subset of people intently interested in controlling the genitals and agency of other people and, in particular, enforcing rigid gender norms to assert masculine rule.

Gail, I get shocked at how much hate there is now. I think about how ignorant and stupid I was when I was younger when it was socially acceptable to mock or bully anyone who was "different" in some way. Part of my personal growth came from good influences that showed me the right way to behave..

Right now there are so many bad influences like Andrew Tate or Matt Walsh or even the current president and many politicians. They all never learned empathy and remain at a low level of development but they have so much power and influence it's depressing.

*shrugs* Propaganda and hate speech have been my baseline for how I’m spoken about as a trans person since long before I came out. When I was a kid people were cheering the deaths of gay people by AIDS and trans people were even more stigmatized than that.

I lived through the AIDs epidemic - while there was an amazing amount of hate, and people promulgating hate, there were also those that engendered hope and caring, too.

Princess Di, for example.

Hate is a constant, because people, but love is always possible.

They were trying to say the trans people existing isn't a 'real issue' except for those who need to manufacture nonexistent issues. The millions of dollars of ads against trans people is newer in my experience, as well as the actively campaigning against trans people(and saying it outloud)

It is extremely poorly worded. The campaign against trans women in sports, for example, causes great harm to trans women in terms of how it shapes peoples attitudes toward them, but their participation has virtually no impact on cis women in sports whatsoever, as opposed to, say, sexual abuse.
