The fretless bass is long overdue a cultural reappraisal. For too long it's been ridiculed as something played by ponytailed session musos in suede waistcoats and double denim. Snooty music snobs, enough.

True. It’s my preferred bass along with my electric upright. I don’t think the reappraisal will happen any time soon though. Fretted is far easier to learn and is the bass most played and taught. It’s a cultural thing. The culture is comfort with western tuning and comfort with the fender sound.
Ask any member of the public to name a bassist, much less a fretless bassist and they will come up short. You may get lucky is the bassist is also the front manbut after Lemmy and Mark King it’s slim pickings out there.
