Adding an extra patty to a burger does not make it a better burger. It throws off the ratio of bread, sauce and other fillings, and just makes it harder to eat.

I think it depends on the kind of burger that you're making, what you want out of it, etc
For me, often times the burger buns aren't the best so I'd rather offset them with extra fillings
Adding extra fresh onion, lettuce, etc only goes so far until you end up with a salad
That's where you're wrong. The burger's flavour is all on its exterior, that delicious Maillard reaction browned part. With 2 patties you get more surface area and more searing = more flavour.

Not that I'm claiming a double burger is the cornerstone to a healthy diet, obvz.
Best burger I’ve ever had is from Sold Out burger in Paris, and I’d say that the bun, sauce, and pickles are as important as the patty itself.
